This
fifth edition of the best-selling Reward Management has been
thoroughly revised and updated to bring it in line with the latest thinking.
Taking a strategic approach to the subject, it addresses the wide gap that
exists between theory and practice, focussing on the implications for
practitioners. Crammed with comprehensive and essential information, this
highly practical book shows that reward management is about performance - of
individuals, teams and the whole organisation.
Following correct grievance and disciplinary procedures
Developing empathy
Not firing from the hip
People are an organisation's key resource - but disgruntled staff can be
difficult!
This highly participative activity allows teams to practise dealing with
typical human resource issues in a risk-free environment.
Ideal for first-time managers and supervisors to discuss and practise their
people-management skills.
* Requires ONE PC (or laptop) and printer.
HOW IT WORKS
Managing People
follows a similar structure to our top-selling exercise
Decisions! Decisions! Teams are faced with a number of situations:
someone is not following the organisation's dress code, another has a grievance,
another is under-performing. In all, there are ten different people-situations
involving a variety of issues.
Each situation has five possible solutions and all teams have to do is
discuss the issue and make a consensus decision. But not all issues are easily
settled!
They feed their choices into the computer (or laptop) and in return receive
details of the consequences of their decision - plus details of the effect on
staff morale and the outlook for the department. Teams have a budget to work
within. Bad decisions can be costly and issues not dealt with properly tend to
reappear.
WHAT IT DOES
Managing People
provides the opportunity to practise
people-skills in a safe environment and see the consequences of getting it
wrong.
It illustrate the benefits of taking a rational, fair and reasoned approach
to staff problems. Establishing the facts, not acting impulsively and following
correct procedures are all important points for discussion in the debrief. In
particular, spotting issues early and addressing them – and communicating what
you are doing –can prevent problems from escalating, in some cases, into
damaging and costly court cases and tribunals.
All managers need to know the relevant aspects of employment law and follow
correct procedures. One-page handouts on appropriate employment law and human
rights legislation are provided in the pack.
Cost: £395 (plus VAT and p&p).
People: 1, 2, 3 or 4 teams (3-6 people per team).
Duration: 1.5 - 2 hours.

Since 1999 my main professional focus has been to promote the proactive
management of the working environment. The human aspects of that environment -
the things we feel, say, do and write - are very important in determining how
we feel about our work: the 'morale' perspective. These aspects can also be at
the
centre of damaging internal grievances, court and tribunal cases: the
'liability' perspective. The working environment needs to be managed from both
perspectives, rather than left to fend for itself.
Everyone in a workplace is responsible for creating the working
environment. We all 'cast a shadow', and tend not to spend enough time
thinking about that shadow. To ensure people feel comfortable at work,
maintain morale, and avoid costly grievances, we need to take responsibility
for our working environment. This learning resource is designed to help you do
just that.
It illustrates different types of unwanted inappropriate behaviour and the
effects these can have on individuals and organisations, and suggests ways of
combating that behaviour.
The 'Actor-Receiver-Observer' model seeks to encourage
everyone to play a role in creating an environment in which people enjoy
working, but in which the risk of liability for inappropriate behaviour is
lessened. There are seldom any winners
in litigation. The natural place to sort out problems caused by
inappropriate behaviour is at work; simply and effectively. This resource is
about helping you to develop a culture in which problems can be raised and
resolved in your workplace.
