Techniques for Coaching and Mentoring

Techniques for Coaching and Mentoring provides the coach or mentor with a wider portfolio of techniques and approaches to helping others than would normally be gained from practical experience or attending a course. In compiling these techniques, the authors have drawn on experience from their coaching and mentoring activities, and added to these with the help of other experienced professionals within the field. They have clustered these into a number of themes, which now make up the framework for the main body of this book.

Anyone who has ever had to lead a group knows the importance of getting the audience involved early and keeping its attention throughout. This book aims to meet that challenge. Lorraine Ukens has gathered a collection of 75 brief, hands-on exercises that rely on active participation in the learning experience itself. Users can facilitate each activity in fifteen minutes or less. The exercises can be used to raise the level of comfort of participants, jump-start a training session, energize a presentation or present a quick and to-the-point group challenge that stimulates discussion.

The Appraisal Game

Focusing on:

  • Understanding what appraisal is all about

  • Understanding the benefits of appraisal

  • Ability to prepare for, and conduct, an appraisal interview

  • Identifying ‘critical incidents’ in the work of an employee

A hands-on exercise for getting people up to speed for conducting appraisals or attending the appraisal interview.

Getting misconceptions out in the open

First, some common misconceptions about appraisal are demolished. Next, participants work in teams to investigate the problems, benefits and fears about appraisal as well as looking at the type of forms used.

Finally, teams prepare one of their members for the role of appraiser or appraisee.

An appraisal interview is then ‘acted out’ with the rest of the team observing and feeding back on what went well and what might have been done differently.

Preparing for appraisal

Ideal for preparing people for the appraisal process and drawing out key lessons about appraisal and how it can be improved. This activity gets people’s fears and problems out into the open and shows them how to see appraisal more positively.

Cost: £350 (plus VAT and p&p).
People: 1, 2,3 or 4 teams .
Duration: 2 hours.

Have you ever given up on a poorly performing team member?

Are you trying to manage a team member's bad attitude?

Real change only happens when the decision to change comes from the person doing the changing. The Painless Performance Improvement training video provides managers with a simple and proven technique to help team members improve their own poor performance without the drama, pain or conflict often associated with performance issues.

  • RECOGNIZE and DEFLECT common SIDETRACKS
  • Follow the SIX STEPS to PERFORMANCE IMPROVEMENT
