Anyone who has ever had to lead a group knows the
importance of getting the audience involved early and keeping its attention
throughout. This book aims to meet that challenge. Lorraine Ukens has gathered a
collection of 75 brief, hands-on exercises that rely on active participation in
the learning experience itself. Users can facilitate each activity in fifteen
minutes or less. The exercises can be used to raise the level of comfort of
participants, jump-start a training session, energize a presentation or present
a quick and to-the-point group challenge that stimulates discussion.
Ability to prepare for, and
conduct, an appraisal interview
Identifying ‘critical incidents’ in
the work of an employee
A hands-on exercise for getting
people up to speed for conducting appraisals or attending the appraisal
interview.
Getting misconceptions out in the
open
First, some common misconceptions
about appraisal are demolished. Next, participants work in teams to investigate
the problems, benefits and fears about appraisal as well as looking at the type
of forms used.
Finally, teams prepare one of their
members for the role of appraiser or appraisee.
An appraisal interview is then ‘acted
out’ with the rest of the team observing and feeding back on what went well and
what might have been done differently.
Preparing for appraisal
Ideal for preparing people for the
appraisal process and drawing out key lessons about appraisal and how it can be
improved. This activity gets people’s fears and problems out into the open and
shows them how to see appraisal more positively.
Cost: £350 (plus VAT and p&p).
People: 1, 2,3 or 4 teams .
Duration: 2 hours.

keep the attention and maintain the learning potential of employees. At times
during a training session people switch off. This is where "Take 5" comes in. It
provides numerous brain-teasing, interactive puzzles and quizzes that will
energise and recover the attention of delegates. This selection of over 130
quizzes and brain - teasers covers a wide range of health and safety topics as
well as some on general knowledge. They can be undertaken individually, in pairs
or as a group and are ideal for provoking further discussion. Just select the
type of quiz and the area of interest e.g. Manual Handling Crossword, print it
off from the CD-Rom and hand it out to the trainees. Most of the quizzes have an
