Chemical Safety
- Chemicals are solid, liquid or vapour substances which are
used to produce many common items.
- All chemical substances are potentially hazardous to
health. Some are more hazardous than others.
- Serious accidents can result from the misuse of chemicals.
- The COSHH Regulations require all employees to:
- use any control measures in place;
- practise a high standard of personal hygiene;
- report any defects in control measures or equipment;
- properly use any PPE provided.
- NEVER UNDERESTIMATE THE RISKS WHEN WORKING WITH CHEMICALS.
- You should be aware of the specific hazards of chemicals you work with.
- The CHIP Regulations aim to protect people and the environment from the ill effects
of chemicals.
- Chemical hazards vary according to the nature and behaviour of the chemicals concerned.
- The most common hazard classifications are:
- Toxic,
- Corrosive,
- Flammable,
- Harmful/Irritant,
- Oxidising,
- Explosive.
- Always read the supply label and the safety data sheet before using a hazardous substance.
| Chemicals in the Atmosphere |
- The four ways in which a hazardous substance may harm the body are:
- inhalation,
- ingestion,
- absorption
- skin contact.
- The most common is inhalation.
- Employers must prevent exposure if reasonably practicable.
- If prevention is not reasonably practicable, exposure must be
adequately controlled.
- For some substances where the risk to health is by inhalation
occupational exposure limits have been set.
- There are two types of occupational exposure limit:
- MEL - Maximum Exposure Limit
- OES - Occupational Exposure Standard.
| Safe Working and Handling |
- The three main methods of controlling exposure are:
- elimination,
- substitution, and
- engineering controls.
- If exposure cannot be adequately controlled by these methods, personal protective
equipment must also be provided.
- The COSHH Regulations require all employees to make proper use of control measures and
to report defects.
- Never store a substance in a different container from the one in which it was supplied.
- Maintain a high level of personal hygiene in all areas where chemicals are handled.
- Knowing first aid can save a life, prevent further injury, and relieve pain.
- In any emergency:-
- NEVER put yourself at risk.
- Get the victim away from danger.
- Treat serious injuries.
- Send for medical help.
- Keep within your limits.
- FIRST AID CAN SAVE LIVES.
