Absence minded Managing absenteeism

To help managers tackle absenteeism within their teams, by using a structured and positive approach.

About the programme
Absenteeism is as common as the common cold and it costs UK businesses nearly £11bn every year†. But when someone calls in sick, it doesn't necessarily mean that they're ill.
They could be having difficulties because of bullying or experiencing childcare problems. Or they could be just having a game of golf. Even a slight change in the working environment can affect some people's motivation and lead to days off work.

This engaging and humorous new video-based programme shows a manager who doesn't realise he has an absenteeism problem until it is pointed out to him. He is then persuaded to keep a video diary, so that his team can air their thoughts on the department. This helps the manager to realise that when he takes a positive approach, he can actually reduce the levels of absenteeism quite dramatically.

The programme shows managers how to deal with this sensitive subject area in three simple stages.

1. Acknowledging the problem.

2. Identifying the reasons.

3. Agreeing a solution.

Challenging Absenteeism

Most managers feel powerless when it comes to dealing with absenteeism.

This video is designed to help managers gain confidence in dealing with absence. It consists of SEVEN different kinds of absence problem:

  1. The doctor's certificate - How a manager deals with a worker who believes that the doctor's certificate is all there is to say.

  2. The menstrual cycle - A young manager faces an older female worker who misses odd days at roughly four weekly intervals.

  3. It is none of your business - A worker refuses to tell his manager why he was away.

  4. It is your fault I'm stressed - How a manager deals with stress caused by work

  5. It is stress! (the external cause) - Absence caused by stress outside of work

  6. Take it as holiday - How a manager deals with a worker who volunteers to take the time from his holiday entitlement.

  7. The union rep - A worker demands the right to be accompanied by his union representative at a discussion of his absence.

Challenging Absenteeism has been designed to help managers gain confidence in dealing with absenteeism, especially where the employee is not very communicative or the manager feels the situation is particularly sensitive or difficult.

30 Practical Exercises: Reducing Absenteeism

Absenteeism can cost a company more than just money. There is not only the lost productivity, but the lost morale of other employees, the time and hassle to cover their work.

Some absenteeism is genuine and unavoidable; the person is ill, or there has been a domestic crisis. Some absenteeism is unacceptable but may be due to work related circumstances that need to be resolved – harassment, bullying or stress. Some absenteeism is unacceptable in any circumstance. However, this is an area that managers often ignore, it is all brushed under the carpet as ‘sickness’.

30 Practical Exercises: Reducing Absenteeism provides you with 30 exercises to help your managers learn and practise the skills they need to get to the root cause of absenteeism and to help people to come to work at all times when they should and could.

w Covers record keeping, absence policies
w Interviewing absentees - counselling, return-to-work or discipline interviews
w Handling long term absence
w Templates and checklist for use in the workplace

The activities in this pack will help your managers to get to grips with this potentially thorny subject, by giving them the confidence and skills they need.
