FAST Coaching: Developing Managers Who Coach as They Manage

Most coaching within organisations is done by managers, and yet most managers have received little or no training for this role. Given the value of coaching in growing performance, retention and motivation of staff failing to prepare managers to coach is wasting valuable resources.

FAST Coaching provides a resource for trainers and coaches so that managers can be trained in key coaching skills,
Based on the best selling coaching book ‘Coaching to Solutions’, author Carole Pemberton provides a flexible resource that can be used in short or extended training sessions.

The DVD stars Ewen Mcintosh (Keith from the The Office) as a manager who is committed to coaching 4 very different staff to raise their performance. He does this by using the FAST coaching approach.

From faking it to making it
One-to-one coaching in the real world

This programme provides managers with the skills to guide and encourage individuals towards greater performance.

Based on the successful Channel 4 TV series, Faking It, this new programme will provide both newcomers and experienced managers with a practical framework that can be used to coach others, which will empower and improve productivity.

Using a real-life example from the series, the programme demonstrates how Sian Evans, a reserved professional cellist, was trained to become a London club DJ over the course of one month by a team of coaches.

After being taken from her countryside lifestyle to London, Sian was taught how to mix records and given dance lessons and a crash-course in clubbing culture. With the aid of expert coaching she received, Sian was successfully transformed and was able to convince a panel of experts that she was a seasoned DJ.

The programme uses strong simple messages, which are easy for managers who need to learn the fundamentals of coaching to understand and relate to their own circumstances.

These messages include identifying the objective with the learner at the outset, understanding the importance of building skills, confidence and attitude, and taking the process one step at a time.
Successful coaching is a rewarding experience, not just for the learner whose abilities are enhanced and horizons widened, but also for the coach.

Pass it on: coaching skills for managers

To give managers the coaching skills they need to guide and encourage their people towards greater performance.

About the programme
Coaching is vital, but frequently neglected. Whilst line managers are increasingly expected to take on the responsibility for coaching, very few are truly trained to do so. A recent CIPD survey showed that 63% were involved in coaching activity, with organisations looking to create in-house coaching capability rather than recruit external coaches on an ad hoc basis. Yet, a meagre 2% of respondents trained their line managers to do it.

In addition, line managers may feel they're far too busy and not see its importance. But coaching is a mainstream management role ' it's essential that managers pass on knowledge & develop the skills of the people who work for them.

Effective coaching helps people to progress and contribute more fully to the business objectives and ensures that individuals get the one-to-one guidance they need to perform to the best of their ability.

Pass it on: coaching skills for managers is our brand new September 2007 release. Written by Armando Iannucci ('The thick of it' & 'I'm Alan Partridge') it uses clear messaging, humour and practical, believable examples of how to get coaching right (and wrong). It also demonstrates the way in which effective coaching can facilitate development through any organisation and how personally rewarding it is for the coach too.

The helping hand
Coaching skills for managers

To ensure managers identify skills needs in their teams, and act upon them in order to improve people’s performance.

About the programme
The helping hand shows managers that understanding the need for coaching, and then learning how to coach, is an essential part of their jobs. In this amusing drama, a manager who knows nothing about coaching has plenty to learn.

The manager needs to identify which tasks a team member could take responsibility for, and coach him or her accordingly. He learns how to identify exactly where the need for coaching lies, how to conduct the coaching itself, and how to monitor the results.

This comprehensive programme shows how, with the right teaching, the manager is able to improve people’s performance and motivation, and that coaching is an invaluable tool for helping individuals and the business develop together.

You'll soon get the hang of it
The techniques of one-to-one training

The rules to follow to teach people in your care how to do a job.

About the programme
You’ll soon get the hang of it is the definitive programme on the techniques of one-to-one training. Written and presented by Hugh Laurie, it looks at both the theory and practice of training in a typically humorous and memorable fashion.

It explains how important it is for managers and team leaders to have the skills to teach people in their care. It introduces a variety of scenarios - in a warehouse, an office, a hotel and even a dentist’s surgery - to demonstrate the psychology of why people want to learn and then how to help them.

Managers must undertake careful preparation and understand what is to be taught, and to whom the teaching is to be given. The lessons show how to put the training into context, break the process into digestible chunks, and ensure the trainee practises at every step. This must be followed by praise and encouragement, and with a review at every stage of progress.

As Hugh Laurie points out: "It’s human nature to want to learn; the desire is already there. A trainer’s job is to give it a nudge every now and then."

Coaching for Success

Formal training is not the only way of improving performance.
Coaching, too, is an extremely powerful way of expanding business skills and hands-on capabilities - both for the teacher and trainee. Good coaching fosters teamwork, boosting confidence and trust.
Coaching for Success will help your people get the best from each other. Using examples within the Avondale Publishing Company, staff learn why coaching is necessary and how it can help both themselves and their organisation.
The course explains the chemistry of the coaching partnership and gives practical, step-by-step guidance on working through the coaching process. The five key stages (establish current competence; agree the learning objectives; create the hands-on opportunity; give feedback; recap and summarise) are identified and explored. The Coaching for Success CD-ROM is split into two modules: Module 1 - Principles, Process and Applications / Module 2 - Skills, Styles and Opportunities / These modules are not available separately.
The video version of Coaching for Success includes three training session outlines: one for directors and senior managers, one for middle managers and supervisors, and one for all other employees.

Prepare for Some Tips

This is essential viewing for everyone who supervises and trains others.
The video reveals the story of George, the inventory manager, who tends to blame incompetent staff for the problems they are having. Then, whilst on an adventure based executive training programme, he is taught how to jump out of a plane. The techniques used by his parachute training instructor are a revelation. He discovers a five-step process for on-the- job training - preparation; telling your learners the big picture; illustrating how the job is done; having the learner practice the work; and finally supporting the learner as they become proficient in the newly acquired skills.

Coaching for Results

THE COMPLETE COACHING PACKAGE

Coaching for Results is a comprehensive training resource that will help turn managers into effective coaches. Combining drama, documentary interviews and a real-life coaching session, the package demonstrates how to coach successfully by developing a set of simple listening and questioning skills, and applying them.

Strong coaching skills are invaluable to any business. Through effective coaching, managers can encourage and motivate staff, change attitudes, bring in new ideas and increase job satisfaction. Coaching for Results presents a three-step model to enable your managers to introduce a coaching culture into your organisation by:

bullet

introducing the problem in a non-threatening way and exploring the use of cause-and-effect questions

bullet

drawing out a solution from the individual being coached, and checking understanding of ideas

bullet

agreeing a follow-up plan and setting review dates.

The Resource Video expands upon this three-step model and shows coaching in practice. Three short programmes examine:

bullet

Coaching Skills - which employs humour to show how coaching differs from other apparently similar people management skills

bullet

Coaching Live - a fly-on-the-wall documentary that illustrates successful coaching in real life

bullet

Making a Case for Coaching - Brooke Bond Foods has successfully
introduced a coaching system in its production plants. By empowering staff to solve their own problems, the time taken over completing a vital task is cut from two days to two hours!

By setting clear objectives and following key principles, the managers in your business will have all the necessary strategies and resources to implement an effective coaching culture.

When the Coach is You!

These days, coaching isn't only the responsibility of the manager. Any team member may be called upon to coach a co-worker. This video walks viewers through the practical steps to increasing success for coaches and learners in any organization. You'll visit an accounting office, a factory and service centre as workers resist and stumble through the coaching process, finally learning to create positive outcomes.

This important training tool explores the perspective of both coach and learner. You will watch purchasing administrator Wes try to move Peggy from one-on-one vendor ordering to an online purchasing system. His incomplete coaching results in an ordering snafu on Peggy's part. Ultimately they learn to work together to make the coaching process successful.

In the factory, shop foreman Michelle enlists Hector to help a co-worker increase productivity. Hector's not too keen on losing his own time on the line but in the end sees that teaching Arnold what he has learned over the years not only improves his co-worker's skills and efficiency, but increases the entire shop's productivity.

At the service centre, veteran service representative Todd is none too pleased to have a freshman rep assigned to coach him on calls. His defensiveness and stubbornness make it difficult for him to take Vicki's suggestions but Vicki's coaching allows him to see how his technical proficiency could be balanced with a greater sensitivity toward client needs.

You will watch the evolution of these encounters, skipping from one scenario to the next as each pair illustrates the skills necessary for successful coaching.

Viewers will explore how to:

bullet

prepare the learner

bullet

demonstrate for the learner the skills desired

bullet

establish and maintain a positive coaching atmosphere

bullet

let the learner perform his/her newly learned skills

Practical Coach

Coaching is all about inspiring, encouraging, and challenging your team. It's as simple as noticing how your team is performing and then letting them know you notice. In other words, coaching is the process of letting people know that what they do matters to you. This film offers sensible advice to encouraging good work, correcting poor work, using good judgement and caring about each member of your team.

Think of the people in your life who helped you get where you are today. All the "coaches" who were there for you, who cared about you, and who were honest with you when you needed it most. Now it's your turn! Coaching is all about making the best of the ups and downs that your team members experience every single day. Great coaching comes from knowing how to do this gently, directly and sincerely.

From getting good work repeated to correcting poor work in a positive way, to turning dead-end performances around, The Practical Coach offers sensible advice for coaches who care. Film and television personality Michael Horton hosts this light-hearted look at the everyday challenges and pleasures of coaching great work.

Viewers will learn how let their team members know they matter:

bullet

Identifies 'best practice' - approaches they can take when giving feedback to others

bullet

Establish relationships to fire-up, support and maintain their learning

bullet

Can be used as group training or self study.
