Equal opportunities for all
This programme
shows employees how all types of discrimination can and should be avoided in the
workplace.
About the
programme
This video demonstrates some of the common discrimination problems using
dramatised case studies. It shows that it may be wrong to treat everybody as if
they are the same, because people are individuals. And it may be equally as
wrong to treat them as different, either because of stereotypes or by judging
one aspect of their persona such as age and race.
Femi Otitoju, a leading authority on equal opportunities, takes us through five
clear examples.
 |
What can we do for him? Dealing
with physical disability and how easy it is to make assumptions about others
|
 |
Ron’s girls. How inappropriate
language about someone else’s gender or sexuality can be offensive and cruel,
even if we don’t realise it |
 |
Present company accepted… About
racial discrimination and the importance of non-verbal communication as well
as what people say |
 |
Can’t they take a joke? Covers the
issue of age and how jokes at the expense of individuals or groups can offend
|
 |
Jobs for the boys. Brings all the
issues together, when two women second-guess their organisation’s recruitment
strategy with nothing to go on but stereotypical assumptions |
The benefits
 |
Case studies with/without commentary, and flexible written materials
|
 |
Sensitive treatment of a problem issue for all staff members
|
 |
Wide-ranging problems treated in a sensible, practical way |

understanding.
About the programme
This is an entertaining parable about being different; about being an 'O'
among a group of 'X's, such as being a minority through race, sex, handicap,
education, age or occupation. It demonstrates how to integrate non-traditional
employees into a team - avoiding sensitive issues in a non-threatening way.
The discussion that follows the video will be co-operative, and helps promote
understanding and personal effectiveness in work teams. Team members should
become more comfortable in their dealings with each other and thus work
together more productively.

internationally.
It covers:
 |
How conflicting assumptions about

The workplace
is changing, reflecting the increasing diversity of our communities. With
these changes come new challenges.
This

our day. As more and more women and minorities enter the workplace, managing

THE DIFFERENCE: Diversity at work
DVD 1: What the Photocopier saw
48 minutes of powerful and
entertaining drama scenes showing the costs and benefits of managing a diverse
team badly or well. The action revolves around the office photocopier, a
silent witness to countless everyday incidents revealing how the business
suffers when team members fail to treat each other with respect. This is a
subtle training video and there is little spoon feeding - because Diversity is
a subtle and complex subject. Users who want clear guidance about training
points will find it in the accompanying Training Manual. This is also a more
versatile training video than most - the scenes could contribute to training
in a number of other areas, including communication skills, team working and
supervisory skills.
DVD 2: Real people: different people
Six people talk about the prejudices
and stereotypes they encounter at work because of their personal
characteristics: their age, gender, race, sexuality, disability or parental
responsibilities. Each has their own way of dealing with other people’s
attitudes towards them. For some, prejudice causes extra pressure to achieve.
Some are less able to work effectively because of the attitudes they meet. In
this 24 minute programme, we also hear about the positive benefits each of the
six brings to work by being ‘different’.
The programme comes with a
comprehensive Training Manual, in print or on CD-ROM, structured to support
use by trainers or individual learners. Includes a detailed supplement about
the legal framework for diversity and equal opportunities.

Diversity Challenge Maximising
the potential of our diverse workforce
The UK workforce is more diverse that it has ever been. There are more
women, ethnic minorities and disabled people in the workforce than ever
before, moreover the workforce is getting older. It is estimated that by 2011
white non-disabled men will only make up a fifth of the labour market.
For organisations to continue to be successful, they must recruit, retain
and promote talented people without prejudice. Equally, it is critical that
the existing workforce welcomes these people and provides a secure, inclusive
environment where everyone feels valued and their talents fully utilised.
This diversity training DVD enables trainers and managers to understand the
changes at both individual and organisational level that need to be made to
achieve an inclusive workplace and workforce.
The Diversity Challenge comes in three parts:
Part One: Provides an overview of the changing nature of the working
environment in terms of the diverse make-up of the workforce. It is relevant
to all levels of staff.
Part Two: This is a series of short drama scenes giving an account of how
an organisation comes to terms with key diversity issues. It is designed to
trigger discussion and reflection and provide an opportunity to explore how
diversity issues can be managed in practice. While aimed primarily at
managers, it is also relevant to all levels of staff.
Part Three: This role play looks at the importance of attitudes and
behaviours in creating an inclusive working environment, followed by a section
in which experts give advice about appropriate behaviours in the workplace.
Key Learning Points

is an important issue for every person in every organisation.

Religion and Belief
Respecting and accommodating faith and belief
in the workplace
The UK has a greater religious diversity than any other country in the
European Union. This presents organisations with the challenge of enabling
people of different beliefs to work together in harmony. The diversity of
religion and belief in the UK is represented across the pubic, private and
voluntary sectors and in all professions and occupations.
Along with this diversity, there is significant discrimination on the grounds
of religion and belief. With the introduction of the Employment Equality
(Religion or Belief) Regulations 2003 this discrimination is now against the
law. This means that people can no longer be harassed or victimised, refused
employment or disadvantaged (except in very limited circumstances) because of
their religion or belief.
Religion and Belief comes in three parts:
Introduction: This provides an overview of religion and belief at work,
including legal aspects.
Part One: This documentary section enables viewers to gain an awareness of
the most widely practised religions in the UK. It features a number of
individuals who explain why their religious and non-religious beliefs are so
important to them.
Part Two: This looks at the types of adjustments that can be made to
accommodate different faith groups at work including: prayer facilities, time
off for religious observance, physical contact, dress codes.
Key Learning Points
 |
Understand employers’ and
employees’ obligations under the Employment Equality (Religion or Belief)
Regulations 2003 |
 |
Gain essential insights into the
four main religions and beliefs in the UK |
 |
Consider adjustments that can be

Sexual Orientation
Respecting lesbian, gay and bi-sexual people in the workplace
More than one in twenty people in the current UK workforce are lesbian, gay
or bisexual (LBG). Since 2003, The Employment Equality (Sexual Orientation)
Regulations have outlawed discrimination in the workplace on the grounds of
sexual orientation. The Civil Partnership Act 2005 extends the rights of married
heterosexual couples to registered same-sex partnerships.
This equality training resource enables managers, staff
and HR policy makers to recognise and address inappropriate and unlawful
behaviour such as:
Discrimination
Harassment
Victimisation
This training DVD comes in two parts:
Part One: is a combination of documentary and drama. It provides an
overview of the key issues surrounding sexual orientation in the workplace,
including legal aspects.
Part Two: is a series of powerful dramatised scenarios. These are
designed to trigger discussion and reflection, and are followed by an 'Analysis'
section, in which experts provide commentary from both a legal and a best
practice perspective.
Key Learning Points

You can't always tell someone's sexual orientation, so don't make
assumptions

Why certain behaviours are inappropriate
It is no defence to say you did not intend to cause distress.

programme.

Valuing Diversity in Teams
This learning resource takes familiar aspects of effective teamwork - such as
the stages of team development and personal learning styles - and brings them
right up to date in the context of the diverse workforce.
Produced with BBC Worldwide Learning, this resource highlights
aspects that are often overlooked when considering diversity. As well as
respecting others, whatever their ethnicity, religion, sex, sexual orientation,
physical and mental abilities, it is equally important to afford the same
respect to people's different personal styles, experiences, talents and skills.
Valuing Diversity in Teams helps learners to develop self-awareness
